When Tropical Traditions (makers of the best virgin coconut oil) asked if I wanted to review another one of their wonderful products, I immediately jumped at the opportunity – especially since it meant I could also host another giveaway! But when it came time to actually decide which product I would review, it took a while for me to narrow it down, and I’m happy to say I’ve made the right choice.
They sent me a package of their organic coconut flour, but when it arrived, I have to admit I was kind of lost as to how exactly I would use this grain-free flour. I’d heard of it before, but I’ve never used it or even seen what it looks like up close, for that matter.
Coconut flour is a very fine, powdery flour made from the fibrous part of the coconut that’s left over after the coconut oil is pressed out. The leftover meat is dried out and then ground into a fine powder, leaving you with coconut flour.
What Makes Coconut Flour So Great?
- It’s gluten/grain-free, so if you have sensitivities to wheat or are otherwise trying to avoid wheat products, this is a great alternative.
- It’s high in protein – a whopping 19%!
- It’s high in dietary fiber (58%), and low in carbohydrates.
- It has a mild, naturally sweet taste, so baked goods need less sugar added.
- It’s low on the glycemic index.
How Exactly Do You Use Coconut Flour?
Because coconut flour is gluten-free, you can’t just go and substitute it 100% for other flours. But with a little research and planning, you can make adjustments to your recipes to achieve a 100% gluten-free recipe (especially for muffins and quick breads)! Here are some ways to use coconut flour in your cooking and baking:
- Add some extra protein and fiber to your standard wheat-based recipes by substituting about 10-30% of your wheat flour with coconut flour.
- To convert a wheat-based recipe, you can add about 1 egg per ounce of coconut flour to act as a binder, in place of the gluten found in wheat.
- Add a spoonful to your smoothie for an extra protein and fiber kick – my favorite!
- Dissolve a spoonful in a glass of water for a high-fiber coconut flavor drink!
- Use it as a thickening agent in your soups, sauces and gravies.
- Use it to bread your chicken, fish, or shrimp. Check out this great recipe for gluten-free chicken nuggets!
- Try making some of these wonderful recipes at Tropical Traditions
- And finally, my good friend Sara at My Merry Messy Life is sharing this lovely recipe for Gluten-Free Chocolate Banana Muffins! Now you all know my semi-obsession with bananas, right? I’m definitely going to try making these delicious looking muffins this weekend!
