Black Bean & Chickpea Hummus {Meatless Mondays}
11Hummus is one of my favorite snacks ever. Any time of day or night, hummus always hits the spot.
Since our family is from the Middle East, hummus has just always been a part of life. It makes regular appearances on the breakfast table, and whether you eat it with pita bread, veggies, or use it as a sandwich spread, it’s a perfect addition to any meal or snack.
Not only is it a tasty dip, it also packs a hefty nutritional punch, since it’s loaded with protein and healthy fats.
One way to add even more nutrition to hummus, is by adding black beans to the mix. Black beans add even more protein, as well as a healthy dose of fiber to help move things along and keep our digestive tract in optimal health.
This recipe was so tasty, I think I might almost prefer it to the traditional chickpea-only hummus… almost.
And what’s even sweeter is just how easy it is to make – just dump everything in the food processor and you’re good to go!
- 2 cups black beans, rinsed and drained well if canned
- 1 cup chickpeas, rinsed and drained well if canned
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 tablespoons tahini
- 2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/3 cup olive oil + more to taste
- Add all ingredients to food processor, and puree until smooth.
- If it seems a bit dry, add a little more olive oil to achieve desired consistency.
- Chill until ready to serve.

I love both hummus and black beans so this hummus variation looks right up my alley. I was pleased to find your blog today, nice job on the web design, the photography and everything! I popped over to your about page, congratulations on having the birth that you wanted and good luck with your future homeschooling plans. I am a midwife (no longer practicing), had my babies at home, and homeschooled my children, it was a great adventure!
Hi Mary! Well it’s so nice to “meet” you! It’s always great to hear words of encouragement from someone who’s been there and done it already.
Thanks for your kind words and I’m so glad you found my blog, as I’ll be checking yours out soon.
My family is from Iraq and my sister makes a batch of extra lemony and garlicky hummus every week, usually Friday for Shabbat. Love love love. This black bean addition looks great, maybe I’ll persuade her to try making it
