How To Test If Eggs Are Good

Guess what? Tiny Tip Tuesday is back!! Well, sort of… I miss sharing my tiny tips with you every week, but I’m not sure if I’m ready to start up the link party again just yet. And I’m not even sure if Tiny Tip Tuesday will actually be every Tuesday either, but for now, whenever I’ve got a great tip to share with you, it’ll be posted on Tuesday for your viewing pleasure. :)

We just got back from visiting family down in Florida for a couple weeks, and although I thought we’d completely emptied our fridge before leaving, I was surprised to come back and find 2 lonely eggs still in their carton in my fridge door. I contemplated whether or not to throw them out, but then I remembered reading a while ago that you can actually do a quick test to see if your eggs are still good to eat.

It’s really quite simple. All you need is a bowl of cold water, and of course your eggs. Working with each egg individually, place the egg into the bowl of water.

If it sinks to the bottom, it’s still good. If it sinks but is standing on its point, it’s good but should be used soon. And if it floats to the top, then it’s no longer good and should be thrown out.

Both of my eggs sunk to the bottom but were standing on one end. So, looks like we’re having eggs for breakfast today!

For comparison, I took a new egg from the fridge to test, and it sank right to the bottom, clearly laying on its side.

So there you have it! If you’ve got some eggs you’re unsure of, don’t throw them out right away. Instead, do this quick egg test to see if they’re still good to eat! I’ve included an easy chart below for reference:

If it SINKS GOOD!
If it SINKS, but stands on its point GOOD, but use up soon!
If it FLOATS BAD!

Have you ever tried this egg test before? Did you actually get one that floated in the water?
