Have you ever bought something that you heard about from others only to let it sit in your cabinet for what seems like 5 years before you finally get yourself to use it? Yep, happens to me a lot. Most recently, it was a small bottle of oil of oregano. I’d heard so many great things about this oil and was convinced that it must be included in my natural medicine cabinet; but once it found a spot on the shelf, it kind of just stayed there…for about 6 months! I just didn’t really know what to do with it. After some research and testing, I found out some pretty amazing things about this stuff. Most importantly, that it’s considered “nature’s antibiotic”!

Dr. Cass Ingram, in his book The Cure Is In The Cupboard, lists over 170 conditions that oil of oregano can help treat, including eczema, diarrhea and sinusitis. It can kill bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses; and it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory, pain killer, and antiseptic.

Oil of oregano is very potent and must be diluted with a carrier oil (I use either olive or coconut oil) when applying to the skin. If I’m taking it orally, I like to dilute it in some water or juice. It can also be applied directly under the tongue, as per the directions on the bottle, but I haven’t been brave enough to try that yet. ;)

How to Use Oil of Oregano

I’ve only been experimenting with this oil for a short while so I’ve only tested it on a couple of applications. The results I found from these two tests, however, pushed me to look even more into this amazing oil!   • Headaches and Migraines: For a minor headache, I like to just hold the bottle under my nose and take in a few long whiffs to allow the fumes to enter up into the sinuses. For a stronger headache or migraine, it can be applied to the forehead, temples, and between the eyebrows.
  • Colds and Sore Throats: We’ve all been sick this past week, so it was the perfect time to test out this oil with a typical cold, which included a sore throat and cough. I tested this on my hubby and gave him 3 drops diluted in his morning juice everyday. By the third day, his sore throat was feeling much better and his head congestion had eased tremendously!

You know me, I’m not a fan of antibiotics. I think they’re too harsh, grossly overprescribed, and can prevent the body from doing what it was made to do: heal itself. That’s not to mention the long list of side effects, some chronic, that can arise in those who take antibiotics. Nope, not for me.

Don’t get me wrong though. Of course I think antibiotics are one of the greatest discoveries in modern history and have saved countless lives over the years; but in today’s overmedicated, “gotta treat everything with a pill” society, we’ve lost touch with nature’s true power to heal the body. Nature’s antibiotic is definitely something I’d try before man’s antibiotic. :)
