Oil of Oregano: Nature’s Antibiotic

Oil of Oregano - Nature's Antibiotic

Have you ever bought something that you heard about from others only to let it sit in your cabinet for what seems like 5 years before you finally get yourself to use it? Yep, happens to me a lot. Most recently, it was a small bottle of oil of oregano. I’d heard so many great things about this oil and was convinced that it must be included in my natural medicine cabinet; but once it found a spot on the shelf, it kind of just stayed there…for about 6 months! I just didn’t really know what to do with it. After some research and testing, I found out some pretty amazing things about this stuff. Most importantly, that it’s considered “nature’s antibiotic”!

Dr. Cass Ingram, in his book The Cure Is In The Cupboard, lists over 170 conditions that oil of oregano can help treat, including eczema, diarrhea and sinusitis. It can kill bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses; and it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory, pain killer, and antiseptic.

Oil of oregano is very potent and must be diluted with a carrier oil (I use either olive or coconut oil) when applying to the skin. If I’m taking it orally, I like to dilute it in some water or juice. It can also be applied directly under the tongue, as per the directions on the bottle, but I haven’t been brave enough to try that yet. ;)

How to Use Oil of Oregano

I’ve only been experimenting with this oil for a short while so I’ve only tested it on a couple of applications. The results I found from these two tests, however, pushed me to look even more into this amazing oil! Follow the link at the end of this post for the full list of 10 ways to use oregano oil, along with dilution information, and side effects and precautions.

  • Headaches and Migraines: For a minor headache, I like to just hold the bottle under my nose and take in a few long whiffs to allow the fumes to enter up into the sinuses. For a stronger headache or migraine, it can be applied to the forehead, temples, and between the eyebrows.
  • Colds and Sore Throats: We’ve all been sick this past week, so it was the perfect time to test out this oil with a typical cold, which included a sore throat and cough. I tested this on my hubby and gave him 3 drops diluted in his morning juice everyday. By the third day, his sore throat was feeling much better and his head congestion had eased tremendously!

Where to Buy Oil of Oregano

You can most likely find oil of oregano at your local health food store. It’s also available online at Amazon. If you’re in Canada, you can find the brand that I use (Hedd Wyn) on HealthyPlanet.com or from the manufacturer’s website here.

For the full list of the top 10 ways to use oregano oil, including how to dilute it, and its safety precautions, please follow the link below for this week’s post at Healthy Planet!

10 Ways to Use Oil of Oregano

You know me, I’m not a fan of antibiotics. I think they’re too harsh, grossly overprescribed, and can prevent the body from doing what it was made to do: heal itself. That’s not to mention the long list of side effects, some chronic, that can arise in those who take antibiotics. Nope, not for me.

Don’t get me wrong though. Of course I think antibiotics are one of the greatest discoveries in modern history and have saved countless lives over the years; but in today’s overmedicated, “gotta treat everything with a pill” society, we’ve lost touch with nature’s true power to heal the body. Nature’s antibiotic is definitely something I’d try before man’s antibiotic. :)

Have you heard of or tried oil of oregano before? If so, how have you used it in your home? If not, what ways are you most interested in trying out this oil?

Several years ago I started feeling like there was a raw ‘sore’ inside the upper right hand side of my chest…I could only feel it while lying down or sleeping ( maybe gravity had something to do with that). It was ‘sore’ enough to wake me up out of a deep sleep , but there was no pain only the sensation of a sore inside my chest with every breath I took. 35 years earlier I had had cervical cancer and a complete hysteroctomy , so I have tried to be aware of any changes in my body.

17 years earlier I had gone to classes from Young Living and had purchased bottles of oregano and frankincense , because they said that the combination was good against cancer ; so I mixed a few drops of each oil in with some EVOO and started applying it over the area on my chest.several times a day and especially before going to bed..by the 3rd day the ‘soreness’ had completely gone away and has never returned ( this was at least 3-4 years ago). I continued to rub the mix on 2 times a day for a month then only 2-3 times a week. I have used the mix only once a month for quite a while now as I developed a rash from the oils , but all symptoms disappeared after the 3rd day.

2 years ago I found out that I had vaginal cancer (I had felt this same ‘soreness or rawness’ in my vagina for quite sometime but thought it was because I had dried up down there (I’m 63 years old and had a hysterectomy in my 30’s)…only to find out that I had a severe case of cancer ( my vagina was full of blood and tumors). I have refused chemo and radiation and am treating it myself with essential oils on a tampon inserted every other day , as well as completely changing my DIET (with cancer you have to quit feeding it to beat it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). ALL foods that contain sugar or turn to sugar (carbohydrates) (breads ,potatoes ,corn ,most beans , rice , chips , etc )have to be elimated from the diet , as well as mucus causing foods ( dairy , chocolate ,fruit and their juices )…as well as fermented products (cheeses ,vinegar, fruit and juices , yogurt (are not only sugar , but also ferment in the body and cancer LOVES to eat them).
Foods that might help keep you from getting cancer ( blueberries, yogurt ,etc.) once you HAVE cancer you shouldn’t eat them because cancer loves mucus and fermentation. It would be better to take suppliments instead of eating a blueberry , because the sugar and fermentation will just feed the cancer.

ALSO , the best way to treat cancer is to take theraputic grade essential oils in a capsule ( size OO) 3 times a day! You have to change the inside of your body , which allowed the cancer to start with to begin with!! Because cancer developes a resistance to everything you have to rotate the oils continually. I take a total of 35 to 40 different oils internally with only 7 drops of 3 different oils in each capsule – 3 times a day. The only oils I take daily are oregano , frankincense , and tumeric…each one being the base oil I use in each 1 of the capsules (3 caps total in a day). I limit the caps to 3 with only 7 drops of 3 different oils because I don’t want to overdose on any particular oil!!!!!!!!!!! Some oils like lemongrass , tumeric , etc. can be toxic in high doses.

BEFORE taking any oils internally people need to do their homework and read everything they can get their hands on about the oil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…as some oils can be toxic in large amounts…ALSO , know your source of oils….if a company says ‘not for internal use’ for an herb (lets say basil ) , then chances are the oils aren’t as “pure” as they say they are so heed their warning and don’t take them!!!!! Young Living and NOW brand oils are the ones I mostly use and my tumeric comes from Ananda aromatherapy ; Mountain Rose herbs is another company I use , but their tumeric is obtained thru solvents instead of distilled so it’s not for internal use….also , I make up mixes of oils that fight cancer and apply them over my abdoman at night several times a week.

1 of the best websites I found is “cancer is a fungus” by Dr.Siminchini and his theory of using douches of baking soda ( which is highly anti-fungal ) has proven to bring the best results for vaginal , cervical cancer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell almost immediately the change in size as well as soreness of the tumors. I will douche before going to bed ( follow his directions) for 2 months straight and then stop ( so the cancer doesn’t build up a resistance ) for 2-3 months ( this is when I insert oils either directly with a pipette or onto a tampon at night- during the months I’m not douching )

Essential oils heal from the inside out , so they will take a lot longer to work and to see results most of the time , but they also don’t carry side affects and poison other organs! I have been doing all of the above for a little over 2 years now and can say that there is no more blood in my vagina ( although the ‘soreness’ is still there somewhat , also the tenderness higher up in the cervical area has disappeared ( that left after a year ) I believe that taking oils internally and the changes in diet have kept it from spreading. If I had caught it in the beginning stages (like the sore in my chest ) I would probably be totally healed right now….but late is better than never!!!! :)

Wow…what a testimony! I KNOW that cancer can be cured….and God has given all the cures from this earth. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, or mastectomy was NOT ever an option. I had 2 growths removed…and went the natural approach. I made the mistake of taking mega doses of multi vit B for another health issue and while it took care of that issue, I felt a difference in my breast. I have been on Protocel since February and have changed my diet. I have not been as strict as you but I have noticed all of it seems to be working. I take Turmeric and Oil of Oregano internally as well but I had never thought of putting it on topically. I will start doing that today. I have not heard of taking frankincense…I will look into that. I know that you can not just grow this kind of oregano. It is a specific kind grown in the Mediterranean. I buy my oil of oregano from North American Spice because I trust Dr. Cass Ingram and his book “The Cure is in the cupboard” which I refer to quite a bit. I will look into DoTerra for other essential oils.

I pray that you have continued health and happiness and that God blesses you with a long long long life.

I used NAHS oregano oil for years. Now, I use (and sell) doTerra essential oils. There oregano is also grown in Turkey. Love Dr. Cass’ book!

Research has shown that Frankincense is great for breast and bladder cancer. Other oils appear to work better for other types of cancer.

Why is oil of oregano not good for estrogen positive breast cancer patients? I am a breast cancer survivor 30 years.. not sure if estrogen positive.. but wanted to use it for chronic sinusitis..

Have you had a look into Colloidal Silver? My father had some strange skin condition on his hands that they would just crack and bleed – he didn’t even have finger prints it was so bad. His hands are now soft and healed. Maybe you could use Colloidal Silver as a douche? Just an idea – might help you – if you read up on it – see what you think.

Faith, my son is knocking out stage 4 melanoma with nutritional therapies. In the process, his family has discovered therapeutic strength essential oils (they use Native American Nutritionals) and have us hooked on them, too. This winter they knocked out flu, pleurisy, and have been useful for a number of other things. Best to you.

Satin, that’s actually a great question and one that I thought of a well. But in my research, I learned that the oregano used in this oil is actually wild oregano and only grown in certain regions of the world. It’s not the same as the garden herb we’re used to growing in our backyards. More info in this is in the link at the end of the post – 10 ways to use oil of oregano.

    • says

There are a few reasons why this would not be idea. There are several methods of obtaining essential oil. Most commonly, it is distillation. So you would need distillation apparatus and a LOT of oregano. This is pretty much outside of the realm of most people. You could macerate and soak in a carrier (like olive) but it wouldn’t be nearly as potent.

The other issue is that growing and harvesting is a true art. Plants need to be grown in certain locations. Oregano grown in Maine will have a completely different chemical consistency than oregano grown in the Mediterranean (most high quality oregano oils are from this region).

Oregano is a fabulous broad-spectrum antibiotic. Just this weekend, my 12 year old son had a case of cellulitis (bacterial infection) and we treated it topically with oregano oil. It was significantly reduced overnight and totally gone within 3 days. Even better than a prescription antibiotic.

There are several companies that sell excellent quality oregano oil. I only use essential oils that are FDA approved for internal consumption because, sometimes, we do use it internally. For years, I used North American Herb & Spice Oregano oil. I trust that company and they have a high quality product. Now I use doTERRA essential oils (actually, I sell doTERRA and give classes, etc.).

Dr. Cass Ingram’s book is awesome! I’ve had it for several years and consistently refer to it. Great article!

      • Cindy says

        Hi Stephanie,
I know you wrote about applying the Oregano oil topically for your son’s cellulitis, but I’m wondering what carrier oil you used to dilute it or if any? And how?
I’ve been dealing with a small case of cellulitis on my breast since November. I’d gone to my clinic and was given antibiotics twice, but both times it just made my painful red bump smaller. At first the bump was about the size of my nipple, but now it is fairly small (about less than half); although on occasion it still bothers me. I just really want to get rid of this once and for all.

        • says

I generally use olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil. I diluted it about 1:10 as my son has very sensitive skin. If I were treating myself, I would probably go jut 1:2 as I’m not that sensitive. Use a high quality oil. I use doTERRA (I sell it, too). Prior to that, I used North American Herb and Spice oregano oil and that quality is excellent as well. Good luck!

        • Linda says

Cindy and Stephanie, I have never used Oregano oil, but for the cellulitis, you might try combining it with aloe vera. I had cellulitis on my leg and what the doc prescribed just did not help so I did some research and found that aloe gel is suppose to be good for it. I applied it 3 or 4 times a day and within 3 days, it was completely gone. I broke out twice after that but recognized the signs and started putting it on before it had gone past the red stage. By the next day, the redness was gone and it has not come back for over 2 years now. I have not applied aloe since the last outbreak either. It might be something that could help in addition to the oregano oil. I am going to do some research into the oregano oil to see what all I can find out.

I used Oil of Oregano on a lump in mouth. I had been to a dentist / oral specialist and another dental professional all of whom did xrays and poked and prodded and weren’t sure what it was. The last one said let’s “wait and see and if it’s still there in a week, we’ll do more exploring.” A friend told me that for dental problems it’s always good to have oil of oregano on hand. So I bought some, and without reading the label put a couple drops in my mouth. It is STRONG. I quickly spit it out, and opted for 3 drops in a small glass of water, and swished it around, and swallowed it. A few minutes later a tiny piece of bone appeared in my mouth. The lump was an embedded piece of rough, sharp bone about the size of a sesame seed.

As to the woman above using oils for cancer. Concentrated cannabis oil kills cancer. She can find more information on that here: http://cannabisnationradio.com/dennis-hill

This same thing happened to me. Small bump I thought was scar tissue from oral surgery 20 years ago. Didn’t really bother me until one day it was totally swollen. I starting applying young living oregano oil 3 x’s a day and by day two a small fragment of bone came out. Once that happened I continued with the oil a couple more days and it healed up amazingly.

    • Dawn says

No… it is not the same. You must be aware of the concentration of carvacrol in the oil of oregano.
      You want:
-oil from certified organic, wild crafted oregano (Origanum vulgare)
-Carvacrol content between 25% and 80% [this is the primary indicator of the oil’s potency]
      -About 5% thymol content
      -Distilled via gentle steam distillation
-Oil blended in a one-to-four ratio with organic, cold-pressed EVOO for improved absorption and consistency.

And as far as using it sublingually (under the tongue)… I do. And you may find this odd, but it doesn’t burn under the tongue. I place 3-4 drops of 80% carvacrol content Oil of Oregano under my tongue, let it set there for 10-15 seconds, then swallow, chasing it with a small glass of water. :)

A little over 3 years ago, I was infected with at least Lyme Disease, and apparently other tick-bourne co-infections as well. Borrelia burgdorferi is a nasty bacteria in itself and tricks the immune system. So, in an effort to ward off other infections and help curb the Borrelia spirochete, I take several drops a day of a blend of Oregano Oil/Olive Leaf Oil. Compared to beFore taking the Oregano Oil, I am sold on its medicinal properties. Thanks for sharing this!

My husband has bladder cancer, along with RA. The dr can do no more for him. He plans to take 20 drops of oil of frankincense (in capsules), twice a day. Our research hasn’t shown us that there is a level of toxicity. Is there? He will then follow with oil of oregano but not sure of how much to use. Your input is much appreciated!

    • says

Diana, I’m so sorry to hear about your husband, but am very encouraged by your enthusiasm for taking his health and wellness into your own control! This is actually the first I’m hearing about the cancer-fighting properties of frankincense, and after some quick research, I’m amazed by what I’m reading! I can’t speak about the dosing or toxicity, as I’m not a qualified health professional. In your position, I would definitely look into finding a local naturopathic doctor or chiropractor who uses essential oils in his/her treatment protocols.

Blessing to you and your husband and best of luck with this new, natural treatment approach! Would love to hear how this works for him! :)

For the best info on people who have cured their cancers naturally, take a look at chrisbeatcancer.com. After healing his own cancer, he compiled a whole network of others who have cured their own cancers (stages 1-4) naturally, even after harmful chemo & radiation. These people share their stories and tell you exactly what they did to heal. Some are short videos, others are write-ups. All different forms of cancer are covered. Once you educate yourself, cancer doesn’t seem so scary anymore. God bless you and your husband on your journey.

Hi Donna, I would not be able to give that sort of advice, as I’m not a trained professional. I would recommend seeking out a licensed aromatherapist, naturopath, or homeopath for further guidance with this. I’m praying for healing and recovery for you!

I get my oils from Piping Rock Essential Oils. There oils are 100% oil and come from the countries like Ethiopia for Frankincense. And they don’t cost a arm and leg. I’m afraid to buy anything from doTERRA products. There was a special on Date Line news around 8 months ago. The FDA took them to court for lying about their products , being 100% oil. They found other stuff mixed in with the oils. I’m sure everything is ok with them now, but after a company has already used fraud towards it’s customers , I don’t trust them anymore. And besides that, you buy a 2oz. bottle of oil from them and they charge double the price. You can buy excellent grade of oils of the same oil from other company’s way cheaper. But if you believe in the company of doTERRA? Please continue to do as you have done with them. I just wanted people to know about the lawsuit on the companies claims. I have been using oils my whole life. Started with my mother using them on me as a child. And before I buy from a company , I research that company real good, before I buy from them.

I LOVE oil of oregano! Our family has been using it for years. We’ve always used the Oreganol brand (N.A. Herb and Spice Co mentioned above) which comes already cut with olive oil, so no need to dilute further. I pretty much use it as my go-to anti-microbial. I’ve used it for everything from treating swollen gums, to symptoms of a sinus infection, to symptoms of bladder infection, eliminating toe nail fungal infection (in only 2 applications), but best of ALL was using it to treat a case of shingles I had earlier this year!! Combined with a high lysine diet, increasing my vit C to 5-6 grams/day, and occasionally applying ionic liq zinc topically (helps kill the herpes virus), I started applying Oreganol oil – just lightly spreading it on all over my leg, from the back of my knee to the top of my foot, ankles, toes and under my foot where I was also breaking out; and then lightly rubbing it in as the pain decreased. This oil was a *miracle*. It started to relieve the pain as soon as I applied it, and within 5-10 min, I had NO pain at all! – as long as nothing was touching my leg (if something was touching it, it was sore but bearable). This pain relief would last from 4-6 hrs at a time, before I had to reapply. I did absolutely nothing else for pain relief. Not only did the Oreganol give me incredible pain relief, but I was already starting to recover just one week from the initial onset, and was entirely symptom free by 2 wks.

By the way, I don’t have the reference, but I read a research article that reported on the fact that they discovered that the most active components of oregano oil are not destroyed with heat, so steaming with oregano oil in the water would be a good way to get benefits up into the sinuses, as well as dispersing throughout the home when people are sick.

For taking internally, I’ve found the very easiest way is to put drops under the tongue, and just wait (don’t move your tongue around, don’t disturb the oil), until you feel that area kinda go numb (a min or two), then take a spoonful of yogurt (or any fermented dairy like kefir or buttermilk) and swallow all at once. It cuts the burn right away (might need another spoonful to get rid of the taste). MUCH easier than trying to drink it in water, imo. :)
