I’ve written a few posts already on how to make your laundry routine more natural and eco-friendly:
- Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent
- Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent
- Natural Ways to Freshen Your Laundry
And today, I have another awesome laundry post about a new, natural way to soften your laundry, without the use of any chemicals or dryer sheets – have you seen what’s in those things?
Up until now, my laundry drying routine has been very basic: we line-dry as much as possible during the warmer months, but we do have to crank up the dryer during the cold, winter months. As I’ve talked about in my post on naturally freshening your laundry, all I do is add some vinegar to the wash cycle (to help soften), and use a homemade dryer sheet in the dryer (mainly for fragrance).
All has been working out very well for us, except for two things:
- our towels and linens could definitely be a little softer
- we occasionally have issues with static, especially on Mr. Nurture’s jersey shorts and pants
I’d come across a few ideas to help with these issues, none of which I was completely comfortable with using: rolled up aluminum foil balls, plastic dryer balls, tennis balls, etc. None of them seemed like a good idea – rolling up balls of aluminum foil over an over again, only to throw them out later just didn’t sit well with me; plastic dryer balls are made of… well, plastic (or worse, PVC!); and tennis balls just seem like they’d be loud and obnoxious!
Woolzies Dryer Balls Review
I pretty much decided that I had to live with slightly less-than-soft laundry, and a small bit of static on our clothes. That is until I was able to try out these Woolzies dryer balls! Woolzies are handmade wool dryer balls that soften your laundry naturally, and without the use of any chemicals. They also:
- Save time and energy by cutting down drying time
- Help reduce static and wrinkles
- PVC-free and won’t fall apart or melt
- Hypo-allergenic and safe for those with sensitivities to wool
- Last for hundreds and hundreds of loads (500 loads or more!)
The set consists of 6 wool balls, shipped in a long package. The dryer balls are very soft to the touch and give in to a slight bit of pressure when squeezed. They smell like…nothing. And I love it!
After using Woolzies dryer balls for a couple months, I can honestly say that I love these things! They do in fact reduce drying time, and our clothes do seem to be less wrinkled when they come out of the dryer; but my main concern was the static and the softness of our linens and towels, and Woolzies has totally helped in those areas as well. Another bonus that I noticed is that they seem to fluff up our thicker linens and towels so that they’re not all rolled up into each other by the end of the drying cycle.
They’re also not nearly as loud as I thought they would be. Yes, there’s 6 balls bouncing around in your dryer, but they’re very soft and quiet and I hardly even noticed them. The only thing that was kind of a peeve was trying to fish out all 6 balls from one laundry load so I could use them for the next load. It takes just an extra minute between loads, but it’s well worth it, considering the other benefits. And after the last load, I just throw them back in the dryer, where they wait for the next laundry day.
